See and be seen: Hungary

by Nicky Gardner

Summary

Hungary's byways and lanes are suddenly getting brighter, as new laws encourage booming sales in fluorescent safety jackets.

We never anticipated when we started hidden europe two years ago that we might have a fashion column. "The glitz and the gloss that fills the pages of other travel magazines is not for us," we preened as we set out in our faded jeans to report from Europe's unsung corners. But times change, the idealism of a new venture begins to flag, and now we find ourselves writing about what the average Hungarian might be wearing in 2008.

It came as something of a surprise, stopping off in rural Hungary this summer.
