The military base in South Uist (see the preceding feature) turned out in the end to not cover quite so large an area as was once feared. The public still have access to large parts of the South Uist range when there are no military operations. In that respect, South Uist is more fortunate than the Salisbury Plain in southern England where a great tract of chalk downland is usually reserved for military use. The area, which includes the village of Imber, was evacuated in 1943.
